After an early morning on Tuesday, the Salt Lake Bees will take today off…at least half of it. The team will have to be at the airport at three o’clock in the afternoon to travel to Iowa and start an eight-game road trip, but after the day game on Tuesday the Bees will have about 24 hours of free time, something professional baseball players rarely get.

So what does a typical off day look like for a professional ballplayer? Some players like to go get a round of golf in while others liketo relax at home and try to recover for the next series.

“A typical off day usually consists of a barbecue,” Bees designated hitter Paul McAnulty said. “It’s something that we don’t get to do too often. I’m a big barbecue guy.”

One aspect of being a professional athlete that people don’t often consider is the nutritional toll it takes on a human being. Fans think a lot about all the extra work players put in on the field or in the batting cages, but not many think about how important the food an athlete eats is. This is something that doesn’t escape McAnulty.

“A home-cooked meal is always a big thing for us,” he said. “We’re always at the yard or picking up something on the way to the yard, and by the time we get home, we really don’t want to cook.”

As nice as barbecuing sounds, shortstop Andrew Romine has even more relaxing plans for his off day.

“I’ll probably just go to the movies, just hang out with the guys,” he said. “I’ll just probably get my mind off of baseball.”

For Romine, sleep is usually the only way to do that and he enjoys the opportunity to sleep in on his off days. As for this particular off day, Romine knows exactly what he wants to do.

“I want to go see the new Avengers movie,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot of good [things] about it and everybody’s talking about it.”

The Bees will be in Iowa for a four-game series starting Thursday, followed by another four-game series at Omaha before returning home on May 25 to take on the Las Vegas 51s at 6:35 p.m. at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

You can follow the Bees on the road trip on slbees.com and season tickets are available, just call (801) 325-BASE.

Most current Bees players have not experienced Prevention Dimensions Kids Day before in Salt Lake, but the few that were in Salt Lake last year for the event look forward to it this year.

“It’s good to come out here and see the kids and it’s good to have the kids see what the other side of hard work looks like,” Bees designated hitter Paul McAnulty said.

McAnulty, who attended Long Beach State University, believes in school as a way to teach kids how to work hard.

“I’m a big believer in school, I believe school comes first,” he said. “School should come before anything else.”

Infielder Andrew Romine was also here last year for Kids Day and a big smile came to his face when he was asked about it this year.

“Kids Day is awesome,” he said, “It is always a lot of fun to have that many fans, but especially when it’s kids who want to scream and yell and get into the game. It makes it that much more fun.”

Bees Manager Keith Johnson is also a fan of Kids Day.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for kids to come out and watch a quality baseball game,” Johnson said.

The morning game time is something that can be hard on some players, but Johnson thinks this year will be a good opportunity for the team to get their work done and get ready for the team’s road trip to Iowa.

“It’s a quick turnaround for the guys because you have the night game the night before and the early day game the next day,” he said, “but it’s a little bit more of a mental struggle than a physical struggle…If you’re able to get over the fact that it’s early in the morning mentally then your body will be fine”

Prevention Dimensions is Utah’s Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities lesson set, which supports the Utah State Office of Education pre-kindergarten through 12th grade health core. The program began in 1982 as a joint effort between the Utah State Division of Substance Abuse, Utah State Department of Health, Utah State Office of Education, and Utah State PTA, and has been revised several times since. The mission of Prevention Dimensions is to give students a strong foundation of effective violence and substance abuse prevention skills. It will be the ninth year in a row Spring Mobile Ballpark has hosted the event.

In the press box, the beat writers’ stories were already written, they just needed some sound bites from coaches and players and they could get home early Wednesday night. But the Bees had a different plan.

The Bees found themselves in a 9-2 hole early to the Round Rock Express on Wednesday night, which left everyone looking for new storylines…until the Bees wrote one for them in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Trailing in the bottom of the ninth inning, 9-5,SaltLakewas looking for something to start a rally and end what had become a 5-game losing streak. The inning started with back-to-back doubles by Bees’ newcomer Matt Long and Kole Calhoun, cutting the lead to three. After Efren Navarro walked, the Bees brought the tying run to the plate in the form of Luis Jimenez.

After Round Rock brought in its closer Tanner Scheppers, Jimenez worked the count full before launching a game-tying home run over the fence in left field. Suddenly the beat writers’ deadlines were in question. The Express had still yet to record an out, however, so the ninth-inning drama had just begun.

Scheppers then recorded two quick outs before Paul McAnulty kept the inning alive with a double off the leftfield wall. The next batter, Doug Deeds walked which brought leadoff hitter Andrew Romine to the plate.

Romine completed the comeback with a line drive RBI single to leftfield, ending the game and the Bees’ 5-game losing streak.

Fresh off the walk-off winner, Romine, still shaking a little bit from the adrenaline talked about the effects of a dramatic win like that on the course of a season.

“When you have stuff like this, you’ve got to take advantage of it,” Romine said. “There’s too many times when it’s easy to get down in this game…but to play games like this, and to be able to come back and put up runs like that…you’ve got to celebrate. I know guys are in [the locker room] jumping up and down and yelling and playing loud music.”

In addition to the 5-game losing streak, the Bees had lost 12 out of 13 games. So would this comeback, walk-off win change the Bees’ momentum?

“It’s about going out and having one-game winning streaks,” Bees Manager Keith Johnson said. “Tomorrow we have to come out and prove ourselves all over again. Just because we got one win doesn’t mean, all of a sudden, the wins are going to start piling up. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a load off our shoulders…but we still have to come out tomorrow and we’ve got to work and keep doing the things we have to do to win ballgames.”

The Bees will try to keep the momentum going their way with two more games to close out the four-game series with Round Rock on Thursday and Friday before welcomingAlbuquerqueto Spring Mobile Ballpark on Saturday. First pitch for all those games will be at 6:35.

Weaver is now the second former Salt Lake Bees pitcher to throw a no-hitter as Ervin Santana threw a no-hitter on July 27, 2011 at Cleveland.

Weaver didn’t spend much time in Salt Lake pitching in 12 games in 2006. During his short time, Weaver showed off his impressive mound presence going 6-1 with a 2.10 ERA. Weaver had 93 strikeouts to only 10 walks during his time in Salt Lake.

Weaver’s no-hitter has been a sign of the Angels turn in fate as the Halos have won three games in a row and four of their last five games.

The former Salt Lake Bees outfielder and current Angels lead-off hitter is fast. Not just baseball fast, but probably more like track and field fast.

In the Angels’ Tuesday night win over Minnesota, Trout legged out a bunt single.

Angels’ third-base coach Dino Ebel is in charge of timing the batter going from home to first base, and told ESPN.com that Trout made it there in 3.53 seconds.

Fast.

Here is what Salt Lake Tribune reporter Martin Renzhofer said about Trout’s speed after he was called-up by the Angels.

“Two plays typify Trout’s speed. He once scored from first on a single to the right-field gap. He also smashed a stand-up triple to left-center field — without drawing a throw.”

Salt Lake Bees’ pitcher Loek Van Mil entered professional baseball in 2005 with the Minnesota Twins organization, but is probably best known for being 7-foot-1 with a blazing fastball.

7-foot-1 Loek Van Mil is an intimidating presence on the mound.

He played four seasons under the Twins umbrella before joining the Angels in 2010. This is his first season in Triple-A, and has proven to be a strong relief pitcher for the Bees.

He currently has a 1-0 record with a 6.30 ERA.

Here’s a little more information about the Oss, Netherlands native.

Where do you reside in the off-season?

Holland, 30 minutes south of Amsterdam.

How many siblings do you have? Did any of them play baseball?

I have an older Brother who still plays baseball in Holland.

What was your favorite team growing up?

The Phillies but that was because CNBC would broadcast the Phillies games. It was 1993-94 and that was as good team then, so that was the only team I saw. I have no connection other than that.

What is your favorite food?

Cheese sandwiches. Just a baguette with Gouda cheese and maybe a little butter between.

What was your first car?

I don’t have a license so no car, I’ve always rode bicycles. I’m 27 and don’t have a license and still ride a bike. Maybe because I was always a little lazy to get my license, but it’s also very pricey to get a drivers license in Holland.

Do you have any hidden or unique talents?

No hidden talents so I’ve got to milk this baseball thing.

What do you see yourself doing post playing career?

After high school I got accepted into law school but didn’t go because I signed to play baseball. But I’ve come to the conclusion that if baseball is done with me, I’ll go back to be a teacher.

Best Candy?

Hi-Chews are pretty good.

What is the best feeling in the game of baseball?

Winning, that’s it.

There is a point in baseball history where technology improved and baseball players got tired of walking to the batter’s box or pitcher’s mound in silence.

Andrew Romine uses "Can't Stop" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers as his walk-up song.

It’s easy to assume this happened around the same time and thus the walk-up song was invented.

The walk-up song is a way to set the tone. It also tends to reflect a players personality.

Relief pitcher Francisco Rodriguez first settled on “Hells Bells” by AC/DC for his walk-up song before reflecting on what would best represent him, and switching to “Morena De Mi Corazon” by Los Lobos. The song is on the soundtrack to the movie Desperado. The Latin infused tune blares as the Mexicali, Mexico native warms up on the mound.

Sometimes the song has a nod to a player’s native area. Infielder Andrew Romine, who is from Southern California, uses “Can’t Stop” by Red Hot Chili Peppers, a band also from Southern California. Outfielder Doug Deeds uses “Gold on the Ceiling” by The Black Keys, a band from his home state of Ohio.

Players aren’t stuck to a walk-up song for the entire season either. If a player isn’t performing how he’d like sometimes the walk-up song is one of the first things to go. Relief pitcher Matt Meyer started the season with Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks,” but after giving up runs in two of his previous three games, he decided it was time for something new and selected “Creatures” by 311.

The song can also reflect a player’s taste in music. Pitcher Eric Hurley and catcher John Hester are both from the southern region of the United States and picked country music songs. Hurley walks-up to “One Star Flag” by the Casey Donahue Band while Hester uses “Dirt Road Anthem” by Jason Aldean. Pitcher Brad Mills enjoys alternative music from the 1990s and walks-up to “Alive” by Pearl Jam.

The walk-up song is a fun part of the game that allows players to show off a piece of their personality. Although, baseball can be played without it, walk-up songs add to the enjoyment of a game day for both fans and players.

Although not a complete list, here are some of the other walk-up songs:

Efren Navarro – Talk that Talk by Rihanna/Jay-Z

Ed Lucas – Closer by Kings of Leon

Luis Jimenez – International Love by Pitbull/Chris Brown

Ryan Brasier – I’m Back by T.I.

Garrett Richards – Lights by Bassnectar

Loek Van Mil – Sail by AWOLnation

Paul McAnulty – Game On by Disciple

Jeremy Berg – Walk by Pantera

Ryan Langerhans – God’s Gonna Cut You Down by Johnny Cash

Robinzon Diaz – Creere by Lercer Cielo

This past off-season, the Angels added outfielders Ryan Langerhans and Doug Deeds, infielders Jorge Cantu and Ed Lucas as well as pitcher as Juan Rincon.

All the players have been in professional baseball for at least eight seasons and are in their first year in the Los Angeles of Anaheim organization.

The group has all had their moments this season, but as of late, it’s been outfielder Doug Deeds that’s stood out.

The 30-year-old Columbus, OH native is no stranger in the Pacific Coast League having spent the past four seasons with four different PCL teams.

Deeds, who was drafted by the Twins in 2002, spent 2009 with Iowa, 2010 with Reno, and 2011 with Round Rock.

Deeds started the 2012 season strong getting three hits in the first two games, but injured his hand, and missed 13 days. Deeds returned on April 22 at Tucson going 1-for-2 with two walks.

Since that point, Deeds has continued to play well going 4-for-4 on Friday against Reno and going 2-for-3 on Saturday.

With the strong offensive outputs, Deeds has raised his batting average to .361.

“Any opportunity I get I try to make the most of it right now,” Deeds said. “30 years old, it’s just a blast being out there playing the game.”

With the Los Angeles of Anaheim struggling in the early part of the season, the Angels called-up the Salt Lake Bees’ Mike Trout to join the big league squad.

The Angels released outfielder Bobby Abreu on Friday night to make room for Trout.

Trout made his way to Cleveland to join the Halos and received the start in left field on Saturday against the Indians. Trout also batted lead-off.

Trout is going to try and give a spark to an Angels’ team that’s started 6-14, a mark that matches the worst in franchise history.

Although he is gone, the 20-year-old will be remembered in Salt Lake.

He played in 20 games for the Bees where he batted .403 (31-of-77) with 13 RBI. Trout also had five triples and four doubles.

In addition to his play on the field, Trout was more than willing to sign a baseball for a fan or do an interview with any and every media outlet.

“I always try to work hard, but if you aren’t having fun, something isn’t right,” Trout said in an interview earlier this season. “It’s important to go out there and have fun and try to put all the pressure behind you.”

Kole Calhoun will move to center field to take Trout’s position in the outfield, and Alexi Amarista will bat in the lead-off position.

The Bees are 14-8 heading into Saturday night’s game with Reno, where Salt Lake has lost the previous two games against the Aces.
